Description
Bamburi Cement PLC (now Amsons Group subsidiary) signed a US$250 million (KES 32 billion) EPC contract with China's Sinoma CBMI Construction Company in December 2025 to build a greenfield clinkerisation plant in Matuga, Kwale County. The 1.6 million tonnes/year plant will more than double Bamburi's clinker capacity (1M to 2.6M tonnes) and cement capacity (1.8M to 4M tonnes). Features include a 6-stage precalciner system and alternative fuels (coconut husks, cashew shells, municipal waste). Witnessed by President Ruto, the plant will be one of Kenya's largest clinker production facilities, leveraging Kwale's proven limestone reserves near Mombasa port.
Overview
Kenya's largest single cement industry investment, reducing reliance on imported clinker and positioning Kwale as a major manufacturing hub under Amsons Group's regional strategy.
