Description
The Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital (HCTRH), established in 1969 as a dispensary, has undergone significant upgrades under Governor Gladys Wanga's administration since 2022. The hospital was elevated to Level 5 status in December 2023, now with a licensed 311-bed then expanded to 600-bed capacity. Major completed works include a comprehensive Outpatient Department, renovated maternity wing, operationalized Cancer Centre with new equipment, revived renal unit and blood bank, and CT scan installation. A new multi-storey Accident and Emergency block is under construction. The county signed an MOU with Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital for exchange programs and equipment procurement. The hospital serves all 8 sub-counties of Homa Bay and surrounding counties.
Overview
Critical healthcare facility for Homa Bay's population burdened by high HIV/AIDS prevalence and malaria. The upgrade brings advanced diagnostic and treatment services closer to communities that previously traveled long distances to Kisumu or Kisii for specialized care.
