Description

The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme at Kilifi is one of Africa's most important biomedical research centres. A collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute and the UK's Wellcome Trust, the centre has operated since the 1989 establishment and has grown into a major campus adjacent to Kilifi County Hospital. It conducts groundbreaking research on malaria, pneumonia, meningitis, and other tropical diseases, with significant infrastructure including laboratories, clinical trial facilities, a demographic surveillance system covering 300,000+ people, and staff housing. The centre employs hundreds of scientists and support staff, mostly Kenyan.

Overview

One of Africa's leading biomedical research institutions, producing critical evidence that has influenced global health policy on malaria, pneumonia, and vaccine development.
