With a 650-bed capacity, it includes specialized units for cancer treatment, cardiac care, renal services, and a trauma center. The hospital was built to reduce the burden on Kenyatta National Hospital and provide teaching facilities for KU's medical school. It was constructed in phases and officially opened in 2019.
