Description
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority constructed a new eight-storey air traffic control tower at Kisumu International Airport to replace the aging 53-year-old structure. The KSh 314 million project was undertaken by Polish Contractors and launched in September 2023. The tower features advanced ICT, surveillance, and communication systems meeting global aviation standards, providing controllers with a 360-degree unobstructed view of the runway and apron. Despite losing nearly five months to unusually heavy El Niño rainfall, the project was completed in 20 months instead of the planned 18 months. The tower positions Kisumu as a key aviation hub supporting connectivity to Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.
Overview
Upgrades Kisumu Airport to full international standards, enhancing air traffic management capacity and safety. Enables the airport to handle growing traffic volumes and positions it as a key gateway to East and Central Africa.
