Description
The East African Community is planning to upgrade the Lwakhakha border post between Kenya and Uganda to a One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) to decongest the Busia and Malaba border posts. The project includes upgrading the existing 25km Lwakhakha-Kimaeti road on the Kenyan side and the 45km Mbale-Lwakhakha road on the Uganda side. Geographically, Lwakhakha offers a shorter route to Kenya compared to Busia and Malaba. The feasibility study for the border upgrade is part of the larger 256km Kisumu-Busia expressway project funded by the African Development Bank. The upgrade will centralize immigration, customs, security, and sanitary inspections.
Overview
Will provide alternative shorter route between Kenya and Uganda, decongesting the two existing border posts
