Magwagwa Multipurpose Dam

Irrigation for 13,000 hectares, water supply for six counties, hydroelectric power generation, flood control

The Magwagwa Dam is a proposed mega infrastructure project by the Lake Basin Development Authority, planned for construction in Nyamira County. With an estimated cost of KES 86 billion, it would become one of Kenya's largest dams. The dam is designed to supply water for a 13,000-hectare irrigation scheme benefiting Nyamira, Kisumu, Vihiga, Kericho, Bomet, and Homa Bay counties. The project also includes hydroelectric power generation components. The dam is part of a larger KES 136 billion twin-dam initiative that includes the Nandi Forest Dam at KES 50 billion.
