Benefits
Description
The Migori-Kehancha road is a 30km tarmac road connecting Migori town to Kehancha, the largest town in Kuria sub-county. Previously, the earth road was impassable with motorists taking over two hours to navigate craters and mud. The road was part of a broader KSh 15 billion road network improvement in the Kuria region implemented in collaboration with the World Bank and African Development Bank. Former Roads Minister Raila Odinga first announced plans to tarmac the road in 2005, but construction did not commence until after 2013 under President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration. The road forms a key gateway to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve for tourists approaching from western Kenya and is the only link through which tobacco, maize, and produce from Kuria and Tanzania reach Nairobi.
Overview
Transformed accessibility in the previously isolated Kuria region, opening up development and market access for agricultural communities. The road connects to the Isebania border with Tanzania and serves as an alternative tourism route to Maasai Mara.
