Description
The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service rehabilitated 13.8km of the century-old metre-gauge railway between Mombasa CBD and Miritini, plus a new 2.8km spur line linking to the SGR Terminus. The KES 6 billion project features a 2.3km bridge across Makupa Creek, passenger stations at Mombasa Island, Shimanzi, Changamwe East, Changamwe West, Mazeras, and Miritini. Commissioned by President Ruto in September 2025, it carries 4,000 passengers daily at KES 50 per trip (vs KES 300-1,000 for taxis), providing seamless last-mile connection between the Madaraka Express SGR service and Mombasa city center.

Closes the historic 'Kilometre Zero' gap between the SGR terminus and Mombasa CBD, transforming commuter transport for 1.5 million coastal residents.
