Description
The Nzoia River Flood Control project involves construction of earth and gabion dykes along the lower reaches of the Nzoia River from Ruambwa Bridge towards Lake Victoria in Busia County. The project is implemented by the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority (NWHSA) as part of the Kenya Water Security and Climate Resilience Program. The Nzoia River regularly floods during heavy rains, displacing thousands of families and destroying crops in the fertile Bunyala plains. The project includes approximately 34km of dyke construction (17km on each bank), river training works, and check dams. The project has been complicated by climate change, increasing rainfall, and lake backflow.
