Kenya's tallest dam (153m height, 150m crest length) and third-largest hydroelectric plant. Double-curvature arch dam on Turkwel River, border of West Pokot and Turkana counties. Installed capacity 106-112MW (two 56MW Francis turbines).

Description

Kenya's tallest dam (153m height, 150m crest length) and third-largest hydroelectric plant. Double-curvature arch dam on Turkwel River, border of West Pokot and Turkana counties. Installed capacity 106-112MW (two 56MW Francis turbines). Storage capacity 1,641 million cubic metres covering 6,500 hectares. Underground power station connected to Lessos substation via 220kV line over 230km. Owned by KVDA, operated by KenGen. Generates ~10% of national electricity and KES 1.6B annual revenue. Commissioned by President Moi. Conceived by Nicholas Biwott as multipurpose project (hydro, irrigation, fisheries, tourism) but irrigation and fisheries components never materialised. Construction by French firm Spie Batignolles.
